Last night started with a bad feeling. Loading Rook up, he jumped into the Jeep on the left side. The back seat was folded up and he clipped the edge which knocked the back of the seat loose and knocked Rook back so he was hanging from the seat. I couldnt get him to jump in on his own afterwards and had to lift him. We got to class about 10 minutes before it started. I started trying to get Rook keyed up with clicks and treats. He was really distracted with his eyes darting around and I couldnt get his attention for more than a second. I sat on the grass with him and tried to get him to looking to me, but I wasn't having much luck. One of the other members of class brought your German shepherd near and Rook apparently felt like his space was being encroached so he lunged towards him with a growl. I quickly pulled him in under control but if I hadn't been watching him there would likely have been a fight. I don't know what he was thinking because that dog was easily twice his size.
Class started and Rook was still basically ignoring me. He kept looking behind him towards the field behind the agility area. I finally got him interested and we started working on "downs". He seemed to do well, but would not perform without a treat but did it every time WITH the treat. He's smart. Next we worked on "stands". I discovered then that he really just didn't want to sit tonight. He's been good about sitting lately but not that night. I had to force his butt down. At one point one of the other dogs nearby (some kind of border collie mix), noticed me and started barking at me. Rook's head swung towards him. His eyes locked and His haunches got lower. I quickly gave him a tug and said his name. He froze. The other dog now started barking more now that Rook was giving him the eye. Our trainer told his owner to crate him for timeout for a minute. Rook and I went back to working. The next excercise involved us grouping by threes and one person crating their dog. The dogless person would then walk up and offer the others dogs a treat. I gave the Burmese mountain dog a treat and he ate it and seemed very friendly. I started towards another border collie mix and her owner told me that I should probably just stop where I was and toss the treat. Her dog did not like men. I tossed the treat and she just looked at it. She wasn't eating it. Rook ate from the Burmeses owner (she had wieners and fajita meat). The man-hating dogs owner offered Rook some cheese and he politely turned her down. She instead switched to wieners and he reluctantly ate it. We tried a few other attention getting methods and then it was play time. No luck there. Rook refused to tug on a toy. While getting a toy a boxer pup got a little too close and jumped on him. I think Rook bit him on the nose.
All in all, I think the class went well. I couldnt get Rook to get in the Jeep on his own. I hope this isn't from the fall.
